Six Costly Misunderstandings About Carpet Cleaning

Updated: Dec 16, 2021

Misunderstanding #1:

You should wait as long as possible before cleaning your carpet.

Dirt is abrasive like sandpaper. Whenever you walk on your carpet, dirt gets ground into the carpet fibers. Which cuts into your carpet as if you had used a knife. That is the leading cause of traffic lanes in your carpet. Once you see traffic lanes start to form, there is irreversible damage to your carpet. Clean carpets last longer than dirty carpets. While vacuuming helps, it’s simply is not enough. The reality is you need to clean your carpets before you see traffic lanes. The longer you wait between cleanings, the more likely the damage you do to your carpet is permanent.

Misunderstanding #2:

The only reason to clean carpets is to remove the dirt

As you might know, the air outside air contains pollens, fungus, bacteria, air pollution, cigarette smoke, car exhaust, and a ton of other chemicals. When you enter your home, you carry those pollens, bacteria, and chemicals inside with you. All those chemicals and other stuff wind up in your carpet, and your carpet acts like a filter, and you need to clean that filter.

If you have breathing problems, one primary source of your problem could be the pollens, fungus, smoke, and chemicals in your carpets.

Misunderstanding #3:

All Carpet Cleaning Methods work equally well

No, they don’t. All of the dry cleaning methods, which use a dry foam or a dry cleaning chemical or compound do not rinse your carpet at all. Sure a vacuum is used to remove some of the cleaning chemical but they leave a residue behind. So, they clean your carpet only halfway. Of all the methods available, the most effective way is Hot Water Extraction. Nearly all carpet manufacturers recommend Hot Water Extraction as a cleaning method because it cleans the carpets more thoroughly than other methods.

Hot Water Extraction is when a hot water cleaning solution, under pressure, is sprayed onto the carpet. Then extracted out of your carpet and taken out to a dirty water tank outside the home via a two-inch hose. The world’s largest carpet manufacturer, Shaw Industries, recommends Hot Water Extraction as the primary method of cleaning carpets.

There are a couple of different kinds of Hot Water Extraction machines. If they use a gigantic carpet cleaning extraction machine that operates from a van or truck outside your facility, it’s called truck-mounted extraction. If they use a small unit brought inside, it’s called portable extraction. The first choice is the truck-mounted unit, and Shaw Industries recommends the small portable unit only in areas where the truck-mounted unit won’t reach.

The truck-mounted extraction cleans much better because it heats the water to a higher temperature, which breaks up the dirt, bacteria, chemicals, and pollens in the carpet. Then the machine uses high suction to draw the dirt and chemicals out of your carpet.

Misunderstanding #4:

Having the right equipment is all a company needs to clean your carpets properly

Not true. Many companies own Hot-Water Extraction machines, but not everyone teaches their employees how to use them properly. So, choose your carpet cleaner carefully. There are many ways a Professional Carpet Cleaner can get training. Most new carpet cleaning technicians get their first training on-the-job. However, someone who wants to get training in the cleaning industry only has to get online and search for it. Classes are going on all the time from basic carpet cleaning and stain removal to water restoration. Whatever you want to learn, there is someone out there teaching the class. So there is no excuse for not know what to do in a given situation.

Misunderstanding #5:

The Company that offers the lowest price is the company you should hire

All things being equal, getting a low price for something you usually would have to pay more for, is always a good feeling. That is if what you’re paying for is a product. Because it does not matter where you buy your fruit of the loom, they are going to be the same everywhere. So when you get a good price, there is no doubt you got a deal. However, when looking for a service like a Professional Carpet Cleaning Company in OKC, you need to understand one carpet cleaning company is not like another. They vary significantly in how they do things and in the price you’ll pay.

Some Carpet Cleaners in OKC base their advertising on price instead of the quality of their work. I think they do that because they know they lack quality and are hoping your need to get a good deal will compel you to call them. I cannot stress enough how much you should stay away from the low-priced carpet cleaning services. You will never get what you think you’re getting.

Misunderstanding #6:

Any honest carpet cleaning company should be able to give you an exact price quote over the telephone

Unfortunately, for the most part, quoting an exact price isn’t possible over the phone.

Here’s Why:

First, I know this is pretty obvious but, carpet cleaners are in business to make a profit. To make a profit off of anything you need to know what it costs then charge more than that. Also pretty obvious is this: The amount of work involved in cleaning your carpets depends upon how large your rooms are.

Taking those things into consideration, think about this: When someone calls a carpet cleaner, they want to know the price before setting an appointment. Which makes sense, but that makes it very difficult for the carpet cleaner.

Second, you see, the carpet cleaner has to come up with a way to quote a price for the work, and he does not know how much work is involved. Add to that the fact that EVERYONE says their rooms are small. I have been cleaning carpet for over 30 years, and maybe one percent (1%) of the time someone says their rooms are average or large-sized. That’s not to say that it’s intentional. For the most part, it isn’t. Most people genuinely think their rooms are small. The reality is on average: their rooms are average-sized. Makes sense, right?

So now the question is:

How can a carpet cleaner in OKC come up with a way to quote a price so that the Client will feel comfortable in booking an appointment. Still, allowing the technician to adjust the price when he gets there if needed ( i.e., the rooms are larger or smaller than anticipated). That is why I believe pricing by the square foot is the fairest way to go. The price is based on the size of the rooms. So the smaller the rooms, the less you pay and the larger the rooms, the more you pay.

In comparison, when a carpet cleaner in OKC charges by the room, they will set a room size maximum. So, if a room is larger than the maximum allowed they would say it is two rooms. Then charge doubles for that room even if it is just a couple feet past the size limit. When charging by the square foot if a room is larger than anticipated, you would only be charged for the extra square footage, nota whole other room.
